Know before you go: The Red Cross wants you to know this about homelessness in Indianapolis:

For 1,300 kids…Homelessness Bites!

If you live or work near downtown, you’ve walked past the men and women holding signs or asking for change. It’s uncomfortable. And whether you offer up some cash or avert your eyes, the problem isn’t going away. Considering the challenges in our economy – soaring fuel prices, rising food prices, home foreclosures and job losses – the challenge to end homelessness is growing.
About 7,500 people – our neighbors – are homeless in Indianapolis each year.

Maybe that’s more than you expected, but it’s not WHO you would expect.

30% of Indy’s homeless are families

When the average wage of working families assisted through welfare in Marion County is $7.62/hour and the average wage needed to afford a 2 bedroom apartment is $11.12, it’s easy to see how families are spending their nights on the streets or in shelters.

The average homeless family is a single mother with two children under 10 who are without a home due to financial difficulties or domestic violence.

17% of Indy’s homeless are children

About 1,300 kids (under 18) spent at least one night on the streets last year. The average age of a homeless person in Indianapolis is only 9!

What is The Salvation Army doing about it?

Our Social Services programs meet the needs of our homeless neighbors every day of the year. And our Homelessness Bites campaign is your way to partner with us to support these programs.
