Michael Brodrick, Department of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University, tries to clear up common misunderstandings of George Santayanaąs idea of spirituality by explaining that for many people moments of transcendence would simply enrich a larger life (more or less satisfying by itself) that included challenges and the excitement of meeting them as well as appropriate and tolerable anxiety about the future. Spirituality may not be a sufficient condition of living well, it is argued, but it may be a necessary one.
When: Wednesday April 15, 3:00-4:30 PM

So what’s going on at this event? The Santayana Seminar is a forum for scholars to present their work on Santayana or to lead focused discussions on an important work by or about George Santayana. The Seminar encourages both the deep inquiry into Santayana’s thought and the broad exploration of Santayana’s relation to other thinkers, writers, or artists. Students and scholars from philosophy and other disciplines are invited to participate in the on-going conversation about Santayana’s writings. The Seminar meets irregularly under the sponsorship of The Santayana Edition, the editorial project publishing the critical edition of The Works of George Santayana. The Edition is located at the Institute for American Thought on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, 902 West New York Street, Education/Social Work Building 0014, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Why does Provocate think you should attend this event? Santayana should be better appreciated thiese days, here’s a chance to hear from one o fthe leading scholars. On this topic of loving well, Santayana has a good quote: “That life is worth living is the most necessary of assumptions, and were it not assumed, the most impossible of conclusions”
