Day One of International Interfaith Initiative conference: “The Confluence of Religion and Politics”

October 8, 2009
4:00 pmto9:00 pm

International Interfaith Initiative believes that when our faith motivates us to come together in open dialogue and an honest effort to find solutions to common problems, adherents of differing religious traditions can discover answers that none of them would have imagined alone.

When: Thursday October 8 4:00-9:00
Where: War Memorial, downtown Indianapolis

The International Interfaith Initiative’s fall conference, Thursday October 8 and Friday 9, will present several discussions of “the Confluence of Religion and Politics.” In addition, it will use the particular case of Iraqi refugees to explore how religious differences can inspire creative new solutions.

The conference showcase will be a conversation Thursday evening between two brothers who have for the past half century profoundly shaped the political and religious landscape of Indiana and the world. Lee Hamilton is one of the country’s most respected statesmen. His brother, Rev. Richard Hamilton, has exercised an influence on public religion in the Midwest rivaling his brother’s impact on national and international politics. During more than four decades as Senior Pastor of St. Luke’s and North United Methodist Churches in Indianapolis, Rev. Hamilton took courageous stands on civil rights, the Vietnam War, and public morality. This will be the first time the two brothers reflect publicly on their divergent yet parallel personal and professional paths.

Thursday afternoon, before the conversation between the Brothers Hamilton, the conference will look at the relationship between religion and politics from research and policy-shaping perspectives with a forum facilitated by religious historian Scott Appleby (director of Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame) and Jay Hein of Sagamore Institute (former director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives).
