Day two of the conference, on Friday, will focus on implications of the Iraqi refugee crisis for Indiana and the Mid-East. Since the US-led invasion in 2003, more than 2.7 million Iraqis have fled the country, most for neighboring Jordan and Syria. An increasing number of these refugees are making their homes in Central Indiana. What can we do about this geopolitical, humanitarian, and moral crisis?
When: Friday October 9 9:00 AM – noon
Where: War Memorial downtown Indianapolis
The featured speaker on Friday —Wendy Chamberlin, president of the Middle East Institute — is one of the world’s experts on the situation of the Iraqi refugees. To help us strengthen interfaith initiatives to help Iraqi refugees in the Middle East and in Indiana, the conference has invited speakers include representatives from the Syrian and Jordanian Embassies, and the CEO of International Medical Corps, which provides quality, direct aid to refugee families in Jordan, Syria, and Iraq. We will use the occasion to strengthen our program to assist Iraqi refugees that have recently arrived in our community and learn how, in the best tradition of citizen diplomacy, we can effectively attend to the mounting crisis.
