Lee Hamilton
Lee Hamilton served as a Democratic Representative of Indiana’s 9th district for thirty-four years, chairing the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Select Committee to Investigate Covert Arms Transactions with Iran, and the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. A respected pundit on foreign affairs, Hamilton is a member of the FBI Director’s Advisory Board. As the co-chair of the Iraq Study Group, he encouraged the United States to develop relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran under its current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and also to withdraw troops from Iraq. In 1990, Hamilton spoke out for continued talks with Iraq to avoid warfare, and in a recent article in the Indianapolis Star, he questioned whether American involvement in Afghanistan was a worthwhile investment.1
He is now vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission, and he serves on the President’s Homeland Security Advisory Council. Hamilton was lauded for his bipartisan leadership on the 9/11 Commission, where he was the only Democrat to oppose declassification of documents from the Pentagon.2 He is widely recognized as an influential yet subtle player in administrations. He has been dubbed an “eminence grise” (gray influence) for his discreet hand in the Obama administration’s policies on Iran.3
