With very limited resources how do they creatively deal with their challenges? How are we and can we in Indiana be a supportive community for our African sisters? Get some insights from women who have worked in these countries. West African women face problems of discrimination and poor health care. Barb will share an interview with an educator and talk about training, education and skills needs at Operation Classroom, UMCOR, the Women’s Center.

One of the challenges rural Ethiopian young women face is obstetric fistula, a very damaging condition that results from being in unattended labor for days. You will hear about the people and organizations who are helping these young women overcome great odds on their road to recovery. Valerie Chang is responsible for creating the academic programs of social work in Ethiopia.

[ ; ] The semi-nomadic Taureg people in Niger are being hammered by drought. Meet Mohamed Ixa, a leader of the Tauregs who is mobilizing the world’s attention by helping crazy Westerners run across the Sahara, and by helping Matt Damon make a movie about it. Global climate change means the problems of the Tauregs will be replicated for many other groups. Ixa’s NGO Tidene helps solve those problems at a modest cost … which means we can realistically be part of the solution. Talking with Ixa and local global poverty activists will be a great chance to brainstorm about what can be done.
